Story 2: The rivalry between Facebook and Google intensifies. Facebook hired the prominent public relations firm (Burson-Marsteller) to try to plant stories harshly criticizing Google’s privacy practices in leading news outlets.
Story 3: The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed a rumor swirling around today: Ashton Kutcher will join “Two and a Half Men” on CBS, replacing Charlie Sheen. It will be interesting to see how CBS plays the social media angle as Kutcher takes the airwaves.

Story 1: Apple is finalizing its own “much more robust” iTunes-in-the-cloud. The service will allow users to upload their own songs and then stream them anywhere via phone or PC.
Story 2: Groupon offers daily coupons and has ambitious expansion plans. The company is preparing to raise money through an initial public offering that would value the company at $15 billion to $25 billion.
Story 3: The number of U.S. parents who would allow children 10-12 years old to have a Facebook or MySpace account has doubled in a year. A clinical instructor of psychiatry at Columbia University comments on how best to utilize social media.
Story 4: Real-time business intelligence platform Tap11.com will be a part of AVOS, the Internet company led by YouTube founders. Tap11 is an analytics platform that focuses on Twitter and Facebook.

Digital Marketing News #42 — Microsoft Buys Skype, Mexico Text Alert, LinkedIn IPO
Story 1: In an update from yesterday’s story about bids for Skype, Microsoft has officially stepped up and purchased the company for $8.5 billion. The boost to Microsoft’s online efforts will be significant especially in the area of smart phones while the deal also represents a good exit strategy for Skype.
Story 2: Plans to begin warning citizens of earthquakes through test messages and social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are underway in Mexico City. The new system is expected to launch by September 19 and remedy issues with its problematic current system, which includes radio warnings and sirens.
Story 3: LinkedIn is valued at $3 billion. LinkedIn plans to offer 7.84 million shares in IPO at $32 and $35 a share — creating significant interest as it becomes one of the first social networking companies to start the process of being publicly traded.

Digital Marketing News #41 — Facebook bids for Skype, Twitter Royal Wedding, Lynx Stream
Story 1: Facebook chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, held internal meetings about making a bid for Skype as reported by Reuters. Delay of Skype’s initial public offering seems to suggest that the rumors carry weight.
Story 2: ABC News, CNN, BBC, ITV and Sky used the Royal Wedding as an opportunity to launch new Twitter integrations and to experiment with novel reporting approaches. Twitter lends itself to drive viewer engagement by creating a kind of community and conversation among viewers and with broadcasters.
Story 3: Unilever’s Lynx brand releases an app called The Lynx Stream which allows users to record photos, videos, checkins, tweets and status updates from a night out and then share these things with others. The Lynx Stream was developed by New York-based Razorfish for the U.K. market but will likely be rebranded for the U.S. market’s Axe brand.

Digital Marketing News #40 — WSJ SafeHouse, Sony Hacked, Google #1
Story 1: The Wall Street Journal launched WSJ SafeHouse, an anonymous whistle-blower site. Upon launching, the site received a barrage of criticism for putting together a technically-weak website that can expose the identity of individuals submitting sensitive information.
Story 2: Japanese electronics giant Sony accuses the hacker group Anonymous of attacking the gaming services, resulting in the compromise of as many as 100 million accounts. In a letter to a U.S. Congressional Hearing, Sony defends its accusation by claiming to have discovered a file on one of their servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We Are Legion.”
Story 3: More than 30,000 respondents to a Harris Interactive poll were asked to identify the 60 most visible companies in the U.S. and rate them based on different attributes. Google came out at number one among other notable tech companies Apple (#5), Intel (#6) and Amazon (#8).
