Facebook’s director of marketing Randi Zuckerberg, is leaving her brother’s company to start her own social media-consulting firm called RtoZ Media.

Randi, who has been with Facebook for the past six years, gained popularity for creating Facebook Live, a real-time news show, and integrating Facebook into the 2008 Presidential campaign coverage.

In her resignation letter initially released on Twitter, Zuckerberg said, “My goal is to launch my own innovative programming and work with media companies to develop their programming in new and more social ways.”

At DMN we look forward to another Zuckerburg’s social media innovations.

Google is Bringing Back Realtime Search

Aug 4, 2011   //   by admin   //   Digital Marketing News, Innovation, Social Media  //  No Comments

Google Realtime Search is coming back soon, and it will include data from Google+ and other social media sources.

Realtime Search is a tool that delivers relevant data from Twitter, Facebook and other social media services in conjunction with Google Search results, making the search engine even more relevant.

Google removed Realtime Search last month after they failed to come to an agreement with Twitter for continued access to their data stream.

Google sources confirmed the company is actively working on bringing back the product, and hope for it to include other social media sources such as Google+.

We are anxiously awaiting this feature to be re-released as it offers a compelling real-time search tool.

Comcast in the News

Aug 4, 2011   //   by admin   //   Business & Marketing, Digital Marketing News, Social Media  //  No Comments

Philadelphia-based Comcast, the country’s largest cable TV company, continues to make the news. According to Leichtman Research Group, Comcast recently added 144,000 new broadband, customers, increasing their base to 17.55 million subscribers.

This comes as no surprise, as our increasingly digital world is creating a greater demand for the high-speed Internet services.

Additionally, Comcast is suing DirectTV for false advertising related to the upcoming NFL season.

DirectTV ran ads promising its viewers NFL programming for free, which is not entirely true. Some of DirecTV’s other ads, targeted to our local market, implied that Philadelphia fans would not be able to watch Eagles’ games.

This legal conundrum is indicative of the intense competition between companies for customer traffic and loyalty.

Lady Gaga Talks Marketing & iCloud Released to Devs

Take notes from music mogul on marketing and building a brand community

Lady Gaga has taken the music and social media industries by storm. She has more than 35 million Facebook friends, 10 million Twitter followers and her most recent album release crashed Amazon’s servers.

Louis Marino, a blogger at Fast Company, cleverly outlined five lessons that we can all learn from Lady Gaga and her ability to build a community-centered, successful and most importantly, authentic brand. We have summarized five of these as follows:

• Target like-minded individuals and engage consumer groups with common interests.
• Be honest about who you really are to attract strong devotees.
• Treat the consumer like your boss. Put the consumer first, make their dreams your mission, and they will rally around you.
• Create a collective experience. Allow consumers to feel like they are part of a larger group dynamic with brands.
• Become a better company through community. That should be every company’s mission – to be better companies because of their consumers.
We pass this information as it supports our fundamental thinking in the area of strategic marketing.

iCloud release in beta version for developers to explore

Apple launched icloud.com to developers Monday night, giving them access to web versions of Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Find My iPhone, and iWork apps. Everything syncs with your Apple ID, so your contacts, calendars, e-mail, etc. can be accessed from both the web and your iOS device.

They also released pricing for extra storage options. You get 5 gigabytes free. After that, you can get purchase up to 50 gigabytes of storage for an annual fee.
While Apple is not the first company to develop a “cloud” storage system, they constantly aim to improve and innovate technology to reign above their competition.

Al Jazeera TV on Time Warner & Internet Explorer Users Have Lower IQ?

Aug 2, 2011   //   by admin   //   Digital Marketing News, Innovation, Tech Business, Technology  //  No Comments

New York City cable network offers English version of popular Arabic news network

Political turmoil in the Middle East has left American citizens in search of reliable, timely information. Al Jazeera, an Arabic-language news network, launched an English television channel on Time Warner Cable in New York City yesterday. This comes only six months after the premiere of their English website. In the coming days the network will also launch on Verizon Fios.
The Al Jazeera website currently receives more online traffic from New York City than from any other city around the globe – proof of the high demand for this information in this media-rich metropolis of New York City.

This development marks a global shift in information gathering where American news sources are no longer the first place American citizens look. As our society becomes more global, social and connected, we continue to see an increase in demand for foreign media channels.

Recent survey suggest Internet Explorer users have lower IQ than users of other browsers

And in a more controversial story, a recent survey conducted by Vancouver consulting firm AptiQuant suggests that people using Internet Explore to surf the web have a lower IQ that those using other browsers such as Mozilla FireFox, Apple Safari, Google Chrome, etc.

The survey was given to more than 100,000 people, found randomly through user searches and targeted advertising. It is important to note that the test-takers did not know they were being judged based on what browser they were using. Results showed that “subjects using any version of Internet Explorer ranked significantly lower on average than others.”

Here at Digital Marketing News, we urge our clients to avoid using Internet Explorer, not for IQ reasons, but for internet security purposes and web design consistency.

YouTube Movies, Debt Ceiling Tweets, & Shark Week

Leader in online videos, YouTube ventures into paid-movie service

Online video giant, YouTube, is finalizing plans to expand its online video subscription service. Following in the steps of companies such as Apple and Wal-Mart, YouTube is aiming to profit from Netflix’s declining customer base.
YouTube has signed contracts with Universal, Sony and Warner studios and it is rumored they are pursuing an agreement with Lionsgate. Currently, YouTube offers 6,000 movies available for online rentals.

As YouTube expands their on-demand video service, we can expect to see a larger presence on their home page, as well as increased compatibility on mobile devices including Android phones and tablets.

As debt-ceiling negotiations end, President Obama loses Twitter followers

President Obama’s latest social media strategy may have backfired, as Obama’s follower count declined by 36,000. While this may be a only a small percentage of his 9 million followers, Tittercounter.com reports that this is the first time Obama has lost followers in nearly six months.

The White House staff asked people to tweet at their congressional representatives on Friday afternoon. In only four hours, the @BarackObama account sent more than 100 tweets and urged people to use the hash-tag #compromise when contacting their state’s Republican representative.

The take-away here is that it is simply not enough to push out messages on social media platforms. These tools facilitate two-way communication, and we hope the White House will learn from the loss in followers to take the time to listen and respond.

Discovery Channel jumps of social media to increase viewers during Shark Week

The Discovery Channel is charting new waters in the social media world as Shark Week kicks off. Building on their prior year’s momentum, with 91,000 tweets and frequent trending topics, the Discovery channel is upping their game by launching a highly integrated advertising competition. The top two user-submitted ads will run during episodes of Shark Week.

Additionally, Discovery introduced two new apps. “Shark Week Live” is a free, co-viewing app that will aggregate all Shark Week social media conversations and include extras like behind-the-scenes information, quizzes, and photos from the Shark Week Photo Frenzy. The “Ultimate Sharks” app for iPads costs $4.99 and offers real-time and deep-dive experiences tied to the fascinating and mysterious world of sharks.

Discovery is hoping to have a record-setting year and more than 30 million viewers with the help of these social marketing strategies and tactics.
