Fortune’s Social Media Stars

Fortune magazine has published a list of companies who best utilize social media. These businesses not only exemplified external social characteristics; they also cultured a social identity within the company. Hospitality giant Marriott International hosts a website called “Did You Think of This?” where associates can voice their ideas for change in the corporate structure. Nova Nordisk, a worldwide healthcare company, created an internal blog to connect their international offices. Intuit, the maker of Turbo Tax, created an extensive customer support system using Twitter. These are only a few examples of the innovative ways these organizations put social media to use.
Social media possesses capabilities beyond its role as a marketing tool. These organizations have used it to create vertical fluidity within their infrastructure, and open communication to their customers. The potential of social platforms has yet to be realized, and it never hurts to look to examples for new ways to utilize it.
