New York Football fans will see something new this weekend – their tweets will be live on TV. The New York Giants will integrate live tweets from fans into the live TV broadcast during Saturday’s preseason against the New Jersey Jets.
During big plays, tweets will appear in the lower third of the screen. The team has also announced a Twitter-based voting that will allow fans to pick the player of the game using hashtags. The player with the most tweets will have his merchandise discounted in the Giant’s online store for the week. Additionally, each week one player will be for a Twitter chat with fans.
The Giants are the first NFL team to embrace Twitter to this magnitude. Two years ago, the banned players from in-game tweeting. We expect to see a larger acceptance of Twitter as other NFL teams realize the positive fan engagement made possible through these social platforms.
