The 2012 Presidential Campaign may not just be about Democrats vs. Republicans, but rather social media. Over the past two days, both parties have been clamoring to embrace new and innovative social media tools.

The biggest surprise has been the Republican Party’s use of Twitter, especially since they were slow to integrate these tools in the 2008 election. However, they are now up and running on Twitter, and prepared to use it for the 2012 election.

Even though Republican’s were late to the Twitter game, it could be said they are more successful at it. The NY Times reports that Republican House members have more than twice as many followers as their Democratic counterparts — about 1.3 million versus roughly 600,000 — and are far more active on Twitter with more than 157,000 individual Twitter messages, versus roughly 62,000 for Democrats.

Additionally, President Barack Obama announced yesterday a new Tumblr account. According to a campaign official, “We’d like this Tumblr to be a huge collaborative storytelling effort — a place for people across the country to share what’s going on in our respective corners of it.”
