Yahoo has named ex-Google product and development manager Marissa Mayer as their new CEO. Many in the industry were surprised at the choice, mostly because of Mayer’s deep involvement in the Google culture.
However, there is no denying that Mayer is well prepared for the CEO position. She has worked at Google since 1999 and has been referred to as the company’s “First Lady”.
The questions arise as to the direction in which Mayer will take her new company. Yahoo has been criticized for their refusal to play to their strengths, which is content creation, and instead focusing on the search component of their site. If Mayer can reroute the focus of Yahoo, she way have a chance at succeeding where her many predecessors have failed.
